Parent checklist

A simple 11+ checklist for parents.

Preparing for the 11+ can feel confusing. This checklist helps you focus on the things that matter: your child's route, routine, confidence, strengths and support needs.

Before you start

  • Find out whether your target school uses an 11+ or entrance test
  • Check the likely test date or application timeline
  • Understand which subjects or question types may appear
  • Decide whether you are preparing gently or more intensively
  • Create a calm practice routine

What to track

It is easy to focus only on scores, but parents usually need a clearer picture.

Track:

  • practice consistency
  • accuracy by subject
  • confidence
  • timing
  • mistakes and misconceptions
  • strengths
  • focus areas
  • whether your child is avoiding certain topics

Questions to ask before paying for more support

  • Do I know which skills my child is strong in?
  • Do I know where they need help?
  • Are they practising consistently?
  • Are they making knowledge mistakes, timing mistakes or careless mistakes?
  • Are they losing confidence?
  • Would a tutor know exactly what to focus on?
  • Could focused practice help before we spend more?

A calmer weekly routine

For many children, short regular practice is better than occasional long sessions.

Suggested routine:

  • Year 3: gentle practice around 3 days per week
  • Year 4: regular practice around 4 days per week
  • Year 5: more focused practice around 5 days per week
  • Close to exam: shorter, sharper review and confidence-building

Every child is different. Practice should build confidence, not create constant pressure.
